On the Day of Atonement, I often close
my eyes and pretend smoke from incense
is smoke of the Bush aflame that spoke
to Moses. The censer full of burning coals
my soul’s escort to hallowed hot sands of
Midian, my sandals shed, my conscience
primed to rage against a Pharaoh forever.
What a privilege to bow before a son of Aaron,
brother of Moses, Levite of Levites, as he bows
before our ineffable God! expiating our sins –
sharing with us Noah’s joy as he left the Ark
to start a whole new life. So don’t dare talk
tersely, churlishly to Caiaphas in the council,
bum!- wine stained malodorous rags for a “robe”,
a beard disheveled, scabbed hands unwashed.
False, blasphemous, prophet! Friend of sinners!
Stay reverent, soft-spoken, eyes cast downward
to Hades. Tomorrow we'll have Rome send you
there by wood and nails. There, no blood of any
lamb can save the Forsaken.

The high priest then asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his doctrine. Jesus answered him, I spake openly to the world; I ever taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither the Jews always resort; and in secret have I said nothing. Why askest thou me? ask them which heard me, what I have said unto them: behold, they know what I said. And when he had thus spoken, one of the officers which stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, Answerest thou the high priest so? Jesus answered him, If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil: but if well, why smitest thou me?
