+------The Cross
Kirk, Ive seen you marred,
your whole body,
the darkened almost bluish contusions
from whips of blade and stone,
callous war fists torqued towards
your broken nose and blistered lips,
seven Redskins losses like skin scars,
like seven lashes of seven bands of men.
The seven teams that defeated you
are encircling soldiers of barbarism scoffing
at the remainder of your NFL season.
(The Bills, Eagles and Cowboys are
Pontius Pilate full of complicit sneer.)
And they think this is the end,
Golgotha, place of the skull, femur
fragments and the stench of open
graves of the NFC damned laid before you.
But I know this isn’t the case, this
cross on your back, the pressure
to win 3 more games to make the playoffs,
is blessed wood to the touch,
it is the bark that vivifies my spirit
as I watch you pass by me on the football
field to climb the hill. Allow this loyal fan
ensconced in jeering crowds of haters
to walk alongside you shoulder to shoulder,
leaning mine against yours of dried blood
and spittle. Let me wipe your face
with a cloth of kind words: in 4 weeks
at Fed Ex field you will be glorified,
Washington, DC will lionize your life not
death. For you are our Playoff Resurrection.
-----------------Mark 15:15-21
And so Pilate, willing to content the people, released Barabbas unto them, and delivered Jesus, when he had scourged him, to be crucified. And the soldiers led him away into the hall, called Praetorium; and they call together the whole band. And they clothed him with purple, and platted a crown of thorns, and put it about his head, And began to salute him, Hail, King of the Jews! And they smote him on the head with a reed, and did spit upon him, and bowing their knees worshipped him. And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple from him, and put his own clothes on him, and led him out to crucify him. And they compel one Simon a Cyrenian, who passed by, coming out of the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to bear his cross.
