+-----Saint Kobe Bryant; NBA Missionary and Martyr

Kobe, this is you casting one
last sidelong glance before dimming
the lights, before recurrent translucent
specters of you dunking on KG
materialize from spirit beneath the basket
then evanesce in the morning before
Coach Scott arrives. When you drive away
from Staples Center, dust from your Lamborghini
Murcielago in small plumes, this time will be
very different than from when you first rode in.
Young and brash, galloping on courage
as a horse, sandstorm under hooves,
moving apace for mystery in LA as
for 'Damascus,' the city you figured youd
conquer but instead changed you forever.
Some would say you lost your sight then
regained it, Phil Jackson as Ananias
pulling away petulance like scales
from your eyes. But in truth, you were called
long ago by the gods of basketball to
spread a new gospel of passion- matchless
hardwork, a preternatural drive to win,
this almost divine willingness to sacrifice all
things for a title, zeal that no one has seen ever
since. You even went overseas to play in the
Olympics, it was like preaching in ancient
temples in Athens, showing those
underutilizing their skills how to appease
their 'unknown god' who gave them no dribbling
strategy or offensive rebounding scripture.
So now, after 20 years a missionary, 5 rings,
what is left to prove? You have fought the
good fight and finished the race. When you go
to Rome, a martyr of retirement, surely there lays
in store for you the NBA Hall of Fame,
glimmering Crown of Righteousness.

-----2 Timothy 4:1-8
In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge: Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction.  For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry. For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time for my departure is near. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing
