And Ben, these open wounds in America
continue to fester, we like
a nation of sickly, debased peoples
cruelly flung atop the jagged edge
of cobblestoned Roman roads by
failed policies
calloused and hardened
like soldiers of Augustus Caesar.
Our nation’s deficit is
an agonizing epidemical scab, our
immigration policies like puss
incessantly oozing, lack of funds for
education a congenital contusion
calcifying without cure.
How much longer can we
look at one another mutually ashamed,
federated in the chanting of utopian
political prophecies of old
(in the Declaration of Independence)
that bring us hope but are
wearing thin on national patience
because no candidate yet has
had strength to fulfill promises
written to set us free-
face to face, skin on skin, grief
touching grief, from generation
to generation hands clenched
in synagogues pleading to God for
Salvation? Will you deftly walk on
waters of partisanship, sidestepping
waves of tumult, for the sake
of the greater good? Will you multiply
the paltry fish and loaves of
our employment opportunities,
creel in our hands with food enough to
feed our families in 2020?
If our national security interests
wither like enfeebled hands, will you
challenge other countries to stretch
arms of faith out in partnership
so that the world be made whole?
Healthcare is a paralytic presently
being lowered through roofs
of desperation at your feet, gun rights
advocates waste away with chronic
issues of blood that no specialists
can ameliorate, our immigrants
see their dignity and respectability
as a son maddened with seizures
hurling himself into fire and water, violently.
Oh Ben! May 2016 be a Virgin conceived
without sin, pregnant with opportunity.
The United States entreats a Savior to be born,
one we have always hoped would make
us great again, to regain sovereignty.
Will you be that messianic man
stroking the beard of great expectation
baptized in the Jordan River of humility,
emerging and identifying himself as
the Great Physician sent
to heal all disease?
