Behold, the Lord God will come with strong hand, and his arm shall rule for him: behold, his reward is with him, and his work before him. He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young. (Isaiah 40:10-11)

+-----The Oath of Popes; Peter's Journal Entry The Day After Jesus Charged Him With Shepherding His Flock

On the shores of destiny
we watch the sun rise in
sacred serenity, dismissing
for a moment at least, our lingering
concerns about hegemony reigning
in Rome, the heinous cruelty of
of crucifixions, the peremptory homage
and adulation due to pagan gods
the praxis of which profanes our ideals.
We also suppress
the corresponding foreboding
over the slow and agonizing demise
of three years’ worth of vision,
the glorious return of Jewish sovereignty
now seemingly a dubious pretension.
(The latter notion only discussed by the
11 of us before hauling in the
153 fish that thronged our hull,
swimming toward our net in unison
as if obeying a divine edict.)
No, this morning we are content
to simply mull over fish and bread,
miraculous provision of spirit,
smiling and embracing each other
like in times past – nostalgia
for the euphoria we felt after
feeding the five thousand and
raising the dead, etc -
fire of coals warming and drying
our feet caressed by the cool tides
that chased us while leaping from
our boats trying to outpace each other
to meet the Risen Savior.
Tomorrow, you tell me: “you will put out
your hands and someone else
will put on your belt
and take you away
where you do not want to go,”
and I think to myself this must be
the push and pull of polarities
as heaven and hell go to war for
the final fate of the cosmos.
And honestly, I try to envision
the world without guile, without
deceitful men with razor sharp teeth
of malice bent on victimizing innocent
masses of people both
physically and ideologically,
the world without wolves
lusting for blood of lambs.
But when the other 10 have finished
dining, the glowing coals of our brief
romanticism long since extinguished,
we both know the daunting work
set before us to be finalized.
The sign of our covenant will be
the moon, beneath the gleaming
of which I promised to never
fear or flee from howling. So
when the night of tribulation
arrives with its battalion of fallen stars,
demons blazing trails in dark skies
of wickedness, I know
it will be my turn as the Good Shepherd;
and no matter the attendant afflictions
I solemnly swear
I will feed the sheep
feed the sheep
feed sheep.

----John 21:9-19
As soon then as they were come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid thereon, and bread. Jesus saith unto them, Bring of the fish which ye have now caught. Simon Peter went up, and drew the net to land full of great fishes, an hundred and fifty and three: and for all there were so many, yet was not the net broken. Jesus saith unto them, Come and dine. And none of the disciples durst ask him, Who art thou? knowing that it was the Lord. Jesus then cometh, and taketh bread, and giveth them, and fish likewise. This is now the third time that Jesus shewed himself to his disciples, after that he was risen from the dead. So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs. He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep. He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep. Verily, verily, I say unto thee, When thou wast young, thou girdest thyself, and walkedst whither thou wouldest: but when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and carry thee whither thou wouldest not. This spake he, signifying by what death he should glorify God. And when he had spoken this, he saith unto him, Follow me.
