I used to feel like a loser
until I separated myself
introspection with locusts and wild honey
in harms way... dwelling amongst wild beasts
blood thirsty and cantankerous
riled by the crescent moons and chilled air
demons lurking to devour my sense of direction
and I had 40 days to turn stones to bread
40 days to worship pleasure and to
throw myself down from high places and kill the latent
dreams I harbored, making a clean break and walking away
but I rebuked those jealous voices inside –
rejection, despair, depression....desparation
with Words my father taught me long ago:
"never close your eyes with regret
rise each morning with resolve
save as many people from this selfsame destitution..."
and they dispelled the fear I had within, the voices of doubt
which shadowed me for the past 30 harried years,
and peace for me is akin to the sound of angel wings
comforting
in my barren desert of searching laid before me,
my robe billowing,
my purpose revealed

Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. "All this I will give you," he said, "if you will bow down and worship me." Jesus said to him, "Away from me, Satan! For it is written: 'Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.'" Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.
