+------Alex Smith At Horeb

Alex, at Horeb’s base (Fed Ex
Field) you stand. Your head
tilted back with Superbowl ambition,
your gaze undone by thick dark clouds
of NFC East uncertainty
furling in descent. Dak, Carson,
Eli a suffocating mist enveloping.
Your flock of sheep, Offensive
Line, dutifully synchronizing their steps
with yours trailing you.
And now (in training camp):  a bush
ablaze before you but not consumed;
Like fire in your heart raging, crackling,
sans smoke…your eyes white,
dispelling the black playoff unknown
for 100 yards. A baritone voice both
within and circumscribing you, beseeching:
“I AM all possibility. Go to Egypt (football
doldrums). Free Redskins fans from abuse."

------Exodus 3:1-10
Now Moses was tending the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian, and he led the flock to the far side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. There the angel of the Lord appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that though the bush was on fire it did not burn up. So Moses thought, “I will go over and see this strange sight—why the bush does not burn up.” When the Lord saw that he had gone over to look, God called to him from within the bush, “Moses! Moses!” And Moses said, “Here I am.” “Do not come any closer,” God said. “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.” Then he said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.” At this, Moses hid his face, because he was afraid to look at God. The Lord said, “I have indeed seen the misery of my people in Egypt. I have heard them crying out because of their slave drivers, and I am concerned about their suffering. So I have come down to rescue them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land into a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey—the home of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites. And now the cry of the Israelites has reached me, and I have seen the way the Egyptians are oppressing them. So now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt.

+-----Taylor Swift And Tony Conti In The Gadarenes (Of Love... and Starbucks)

Taylor I imagine you
drifting to me steadily,
on ripples of love’s tide,
on a single fishing boat.
Not an armada. Your best
intentions humble, sincere,
like twelve disciples devotedly
flanking you. Your blue-diamond
-eyes of heaven, your soft
lips like those of a Galilean
bent on saving my world (enslaved
by singleness). If you took
me to Starbucks, like your
comely feet gracing Gadarenes’
(romance’s) shore. Exorcising
my lovelornness like a demon
legion. If we kissed, over coffee…
like you rebuking, divinely, all
the macabre things other
girls have done – their
rejection like pigs hurled
into swine flinging themselves
off my soul’s cliff of finality.

------Luke 8:26-35
And they arrived at the country of the Gadarenes, which is over against Galilee.
And when he went forth to land, there met him out of the city a certain man, which had devils long time, and ware no clothes, neither abode in any house, but in the tombs. When he saw Jesus, he cried out, and fell down before him, and with a loud voice said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God most high? I beseech thee, torment me not. (For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For oftentimes it had caught him: and he was kept bound with chains and in fetters; and he brake the bands, and was driven of the devil into the wilderness.) And Jesus asked him, saying, What is thy name? And he said, Legion: because many devils were entered into him. And they besought him that he would not command them to go out into the deep. And there was there an herd of many swine feeding on the mountain: and they besought him that he would suffer them to enter into them. And he suffered them. Then went the devils out of the man, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the lake, and were choked. When they that fed them saw what was done, they fled, and went and told it in the city and in the country. Then they went out to see what was done; and came to Jesus, and found the man, out of whom the devils were departed, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid.

+-----In My Right Mind; The Thoughts Of The Gadarenes's Demoniac Sitting At Jesus' Feet Exorcised

I have known the wrath of Athena,
a most hideous madness enveloping,
transforming me; Medusa.
The metamorphosis of the fusion
of moribund thoughts with mine…
as though snakes entwined, coiled
about my scalp: Once fork
tongued whispers to “strip naked”
stirred into episodic of screams
of lunacy echoing in the Gadarenes
“KILL YOURSELF WITH STONES!”
(Its fullest expression beneath
the glow of the full moon, my howling).
But now- sanity, peace (and clothing)
somehow. No more froth, thank You,
lining my beard. Those demons
swim with pigs. Your smile,
kindness like "Perseus’s liberation".
Please…take me with you.

The Paralytic's Diary - The Day I Was Healed

+-----The Paralytic's Diary - The Day I Was Healed

As a boy in Capernaum, a night’s
phantasms were more tangible
than reality morbid. From Synagogue
I could walk, run, traipse, roam
with friends. Scale a cypress, then
extend my arm: an eagle’s perch;
Mount a horse, its eyes red with
forever-rage against paralysis’s
maladies, intransigence’s fire
exhaled from broad nostrils. To ride
and scorch, ride and scorch,
all of those in Rome/Israel with
derisive gaze. But now- me fully
lucid lowered improbably through
a roof on a cot. Noon. Jesus’ eyes
familiar echoes of Eden I never
heard but know. “Walk with me”
he says.
“And you’ll never have to dream again.”
Take your cot, get up.

------Mark 2:1-12
Several days later Jesus came back to Capernaum. The report went out that he was home. Many people had gathered. There was no room left, even in front of the door. Jesus was speaking God’s word to them. Four men came to him carrying a paralyzed man. Since they could not bring him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof over the place where Jesus was. Then they lowered the cot on which the paralyzed man was lying. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the man, “Friend, your sins are forgiven.” Some experts in Moses’ Teachings were sitting there. They thought, “Why does he talk this way? He’s dishonoring God. Who besides God can forgive sins?” At once, Jesus knew inwardly what they were thinking. He asked them, “Why do you have these thoughts? Is it easier to say to this paralyzed man, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, pick up your cot, and walk’? I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” Then he said to the paralyzed man, “I’m telling you to get up, pick up your cot, and go home!” The man got up, immediately picked up his cot, and walked away while everyone watched. Everyone was amazed and praised God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this.”

+-----The Jordan River Of Taylor Swift And Tony Conti's Love

Oh Taylor, singleness is
leprosy, my heart like skin
riddled with pus-filled boils
atop scabs of other girls’
dating refusals. My desire for
romance retaining its valor,
however: Naaman, commander
of the Aramean King’s hope-army.
But babes! Your blue eyes like
sagacious counsel of the
Prophet in Samaria. Your soft
lips, melodic voice, like the
miraculous edict “[Tony] wash
yourself seven times in the Jordan
River” from your house’s stoop.
Like you appealing “meet me at
Starbucks.” If we kissed, over coffee,
like my soul bathing. My skin of joy
cured, smooth as a child’s then.

------2 Kings 5:8-15
But when Elisha, the man of God, heard that the king of Israel had torn his clothes, he sent a messenger to the king. He asked, “Why did you tear your clothes? Please let Naaman come to me and find out that there is a prophet in Israel.” Naaman came with his horses and chariot and stopped at the entrance to Elisha’s home. Elisha sent a messenger to him. He said, “Wash yourself seven times in the Jordan River, and your skin will be healthy and clean.” But Naaman became angry and left. He said, “I thought he would at least come out of his house, stand somewhere, call on the name of the Lord his God, wave his hand over the infected place, and heal the skin disease. The Abana and Pharpar Rivers in Damascus have better water than any of the rivers in Israel. Couldn’t I wash in them and be clean?” So he turned around and left in anger. But Naaman’s servants went to him and said, “Master, if the prophet had asked you to do some extraordinary act, wouldn’t you have done it? Why shouldn’t you do as he said: ‘Wash and be clean’?” So he went to dip himself in the Jordan River seven times, as the man of God had instructed him. His skin became healthy again like a little child’s skin. Then he and all his men returned to the man of God. Naaman stood in front of Elisha and said, “Now I know that there’s no god in the whole world, except the God of Israel. So please accept a present from me.”

Dwight, the Wizards are Naaman,
valiant commander of Aram’s
(Washington’s) sports-army. Decorated,
stalwart, stout. Yet last season
was leprosy, playoff disappointments
like boils on pained pus-filled
scabs on his skin. But you
are the Prophet sagacious.
Your defensive skills, dunks, like miracles
to common folk in Samaria (the NBA).
When you don the white and blue,
Naaman at your stoop imploring. It’ll be
purification; Each advance in the playoffs
like rinsing his body, of Ring aspirations,
in the Jordan (of basketball dominance)
seven times at your behest. As you
hoist the Trophy high, it’ll be like D.C.’s
once-diseased skin smooth, soft as a baby.

Taylor, my heart is
twelve Hebrew tribes jaunty
in Hebron, love’s mountainous
capital, keenly anticipating dating
revival; Your smile, like a boy
shepherd at night projecting courtship’s
future glory onto constellations.
Anointed with oil romantic…of
my grandest fantasies…
by my wistful yearnings, the Prophet
Samuel. And your soft lips, the spark
of your blue eyes like the Goliath
of my singleness slain. (A sling elegant,
five smooth stones of your charm).
Babes, if you took me to Starbucks-
the death of all loneliness, King
Saul! If we kissed over coffee, my soul
flanking you with frenzied chants: “You
will shepherd my people Israel, and
you will become their ruler.” To
crown you my joy’s Queen. Forever.

------2 Samuel 5:1-10
All the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron and said, “We are your own flesh and blood. In the past, while Saul was king over us, you were the one who led Israel on their military campaigns. And the Lord said to you, ‘You will shepherd my people Israel, and you will become their ruler.’” When all the elders of Israel had come to King David at Hebron, the king made a covenant with them at Hebron before the Lord, and they anointed David king over Israel. David was thirty years old when he became king, and he reigned forty years. In Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months, and in Jerusalem he reigned over all Israel and Judah thirty-three years. The king and his men marched to Jerusalem to attack the Jebusites, who lived there. The Jebusites said to David, “You will not get in here; even the blind and the lame can ward you off.” They thought, “David cannot get in here.” Nevertheless, David captured the fortress of Zion—which is the City of David. On that day David had said, “Anyone who conquers the Jebusites will have to use the water shaft to reach those ‘lame and blind’ who are David’s enemies.” That is why they say, “The ‘blind and lame’ will not enter the palace.” David then took up residence in the fortress and called it the City of David. He built up the area around it, from the terraces inward. And he became more and more powerful, because the Lord God Almighty was with him.

In 2003, David Stern
- Samuel: Prophet - poured
anointing oil from his Draft-Horn
of sweetest anticipations.
Trickling down your head’s crown
…of myrrh, of cinnamon…
of olive. This, from Akron’s courts
as Bethlehem's sheepfolds as a boy,
just validation of your star-gazing.
Slaying your fears as a bear, a lion.
And now – you’ve felled Goliath scoffing
with 3 rings already. All basketball fans
flock like tribes of Israel in Los Angeles
(Hebron). To covenant. To coronate.
To make you Sovereign. They say:
“We are your own flesh and blood.”
Michael Jordan (Saul) is gone.
“You will become [our] ruler” Lebron:
LAKER KING, NBA KING unrivaled.

Ambition Divine

+----- Ambition Divine; Caleb's Report To Moses After Returning From Canaan

At night in Canaan, 12 spies
supine, clustered together, back
on back, back to nape - a famished
wolf pack sleeping. The gleam
of stars above like an angel
tribunal scouring thoughts.
Despite their snoring, and ground
vibrations from footsteps, guttural
speech of its resident Anakim Giants,
my renegade optimism marched
into dreams: of God deriving
earth from chaos, of woman from man,
light from dark. Awoken by the others’
half-conscious muttering: “Moses,
we haven’t a chance to take this land.
Moses!” My reply – "But our God
is a God of the Impossible."  Fight.

------Numbers 13:25-33
Forty days later, they came back from exploring the land. They came back to Moses, Aaron, and the whole community of Israel at Kadesh in the Desert of Paran. They gave their report and showed them the fruit from the land. This is what they reported to Moses: “We went to the land where you sent us. It really is a land flowing with milk and honey. Here’s some of its fruit. But the people who live there are strong, and the cities have walls and are very large. We even saw the descendants of Anak there. The Amalekites live in the Negev. The Hittites, Jebusites, and Amorites live in the mountain region. And the Canaanites live along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea and all along the Jordan River.” Caleb told the people to be quiet and listen to Moses. Caleb said, “Let’s go now and take possession of the land. We should be more than able to conquer it.” But the men who had gone with him said, “We can’t attack those people! They’re too strong for us!” So they began to spread lies among the Israelites about the land they had explored. They said, “The land we explored is one that devours those who live there. All the people we saw there are very tall. We saw Nephilim there. (The descendants of Anak are Nephilim.) We felt as small as grasshoppers, and that’s how we must have looked to them.”
